Dolls with Arty Attitudes - October 18th

Our Soft Dolls & Animals challenge dolls were in many stages of 'idea' to 'start' to 'full dolls'.  This picture shows the stages of our dolls so far.  There will be 5 completed dolls next meeting.
                         Same pattern, very different dolls!

Japanese Paper Dolls

Lisa brought a couple of dolls made from Japanese paper.  She and Susie took a classs to learn the technique.  Both of Lisa's dolls are adorable.  According to Susie "it is the hardest thing to do!"

Witch Sister

Jan shared a witch she made several years ago.  The witch was perfect for October the Halloween month!

October Meeting

The October meeting for Dolls with Arty Attitudes is Thursday (3rd Thursday of the month) October 18th.  6:30 P.M. at Crossroads Mall Center Court near the King County Library branch.

We have a couple of challenges for this month.  Our big project, which will cover two months (so we can do an extra special job) is to make "Verna" from the Soft Dolls & Animals magazine - Nov 2012.

She is an intermediate level doll -with lots of small pieces-  to push us on our skill level and yet lots of room for creativity for each of us to showcase our individual doll making styles.  For the October meeting we are to bring our "Verna" in what ever stage she is in at the time.  Oh! this will be so much fun!!

When our dolls are all completed in November we will do a group photo to submit to Soft Doll & Animals magazine for their "You Did What" section.

Our second challenge is Show & Tell for HALLOWEEN.  Old or new.  What dolls have we made in the theme of Halloween?

If you are in the Bellevue Washington area Thursday evening - please join us with your show & tell.

If you have questions, email Diane Magnuson dianemagnuson@hotmail.com

Autumn Leaves

The Dolls with Arty Attitudes September challenge had to do with fall leaves.  As usual, each one of us had a different idea what that meant.

From a cat sitting on leaves, to a little person cupped in leaves, to a leaf fairy clothed in autumn colors, to fabric leaves, they all made a pretty picture when arranged together!

The second half of our challenge was to find a pattern in Soft Dolls and Animals magazine that all of us can make to do a group submission to the magazine's "You Did What " section.  Oh boy!  We got to peruse our back issues and the new one arrived in the mail with a pattern that all of us thought was wonderful.  Well, except for the darts in the body - but that can be altered so darts are not needed!!!!

For October we will be working on our Soft Dolls and Animals dolls with a mid-way preview of them.  Can't wait to see how we are doing!   We are also sharing any ghosts, goblins, witches we have made.  'Til then, happy dolling to you.

One Paper Mache Egg

That was our Doll Club challenge for August.  One paper mache egg.  And look what was created!

We created one gnome, one egg face wrapped in blue, two birds and one popper (yes, the egg is in there).

The highlight of the evening was the celebration of Charlie's 85th birthday.  We all hope that we have half as much energy as Charlie when we turn 85!  Charlie made the popper.

Next month our challenge is make a doll using a fall leaf.  Hmmmmmm...................

The ladies at their grand revealing - all decked out in their finery.

What fun to see these dolls evolve from a head and body to a fully dressed and accesorized doll with personality and a story.  I think we may do this again!

June Meeting - The ladies are together again

Clothed in new attire, the 2012 Traveling Dolls gathered to share their adventures.

Stella, Alexandra, Carlotta Gianna, Roxanne and Panda Lee

Oh my have they had the adventures!  From a start of head and body to now.  The next, and last, step in their travels is accessories.  Won't that be fun!

Roxanne, Alexandra, Panda Lee, Stella and Carlotta Gianna

Member Creations:
Charlie became owner of many porcelain doll heads.  She found a picture of a Victorian hat shops and knew that was an excellent use of the doll heads.  She built a hat shop to scale and furnished it completely.  All of the porcelain heads are modeling a hat in the first floor shop.  Second floor is the sewing room where the hats are hand made.   Charlie made everything except a few of the pieces of furniture.
Very impressive!

HOFFMAN CHALLENGE 2012

Two club members, Diane and Ronda, are working on their entries to the 2012 Hoffman Challenge.
They brought their gals for a preview and some advise from the club.

Once again we show our unique styles and techniques.  Both started with the same piece of fabric and set of rules and the results are so different!
The dolls need a few more embellishments and they will be sent off to the constest to vie for a place in the traveling trunk shows.
GOOD LUCK !

May 15th Meeting

The traveling dolls premiered their new hair and underwear.

Panda Lee, Alexandra, Roxanne, The Good Witch of the South and Gianna Carlotta

Our dolls are decked out in new hairdos and each one received underwear appropriate for their character.  We dollmakers had so much fun developing the story of each doll through the hair and the base apparel.  You know everyone looks under a doll's skirt so the under garments are critical.

Next step in the Traveling Doll Challenge is CLOTHES.  At our June 21st meeting all of the dolls will have new outfits.  This is so fun to see them all evolve!

This month we had an additional challenge that was not as easy as it sounded.  We made a doll from a wood clothes pin.  Some of us struggled to come up with an idea while Suzie made a whole geisha house full of girls.

The creativity is wonderful in this group!

2012 Traveling Dolls

The start of something good!

We had so much fun with our traveling dolls last year we decided to do it again.  To start, we each made a body with head and face along with the beginning of a story journal.  As the dolls go along the story grows and the dolls get more complete.  Above are the dolls that came to our March meeting.  After a photo session, we traded dolls so the girls could go home with a new doll maker to add arms and legs as well as another segment of the story.

ARMS & LEGS

Here are the girls (yes, they all turned out to be girls) all together at the April meeting of Dolls With Arty Attitudes with arms and legs to match their personalities and styles.  Isn't this fun!

We traded dolls again - no one can have the same doll twice - to add the hair and underwear.  Can't wait for the May meeting to see them with new hair.  Well, all except Panda Lee who started with hair as part of her head!

Opening Comments

This is the premier of  Dolls With Arty Attitudes!
Formerly Eastside Doll Club, we have a new name and a Web presence.  We hope to get our name out there and to grow our membership.  The more the merrier!

We meet once a month on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Crossroads Shopping Center - center court (toward the chess board and QFC), Bellevue, WA.   Meeting time is 6:30 p.m.

All doll makers are welcome to join us.  Bring Show & Tell.

Our meetings are informal and fun.

Show & Tell - We bring projects recently completed or we just want to share
                     -  Magazine publications of interest
                     -  Articles or information we think the group would enjoy
                     -  Upcoming workshops or classes

Monthly Challenges - Our challenges are amazing!  We set a common criteria and each of us goes to work with our own ideas and talents.  The results are always unique with no two results the same.

Dolls With Artful Attitudes invites YOU to join us to share your love of doll making.  Our next meeting is May 15th (not the 3rd Thurday this month - too many conflicts!)  6:30 p.m.

Contact Diane Magnuson at dianemagnuson@hotmail.com to be added to our email list or for more doll club information.
